Trapped, Imaged Single Atoms May Enable Powerful Quantum Computing |
Quantum computers have the potential to vastly out-perform present-day “classical” computers – if scientists can identify and manipulate promising quantum bits, or “qubits,” the basic information-storing units of a quantum computer.

Supernova Theory Strengthened by New Observation |
Type Ia supernovae are used as cosmic yardsticks to measure distances in the Universe. That's because they always explode with roughly the same intensity. The theory goes: Type Ia supernovae occur when a white dwarf star consumes a specific amount of material from a binary partner. It can't hold the extra mass, and so it explodes. |

Checkers 'solved' after years of number crunching |
The ancient game of checkers (or draughts) has been pronounced dead. The game was killed by the publication of a mathematical proof showing that draughts always results in a draw when neither player makes a mistake. For computer-game aficionados, the game is now "solved".

Speed-of-light computing comes a step closer |
Computers that operate at the speed of light have come a step closer. Researchers have devised a light-based transistor made of semiconducting nanowires that could be a key building block of machines that are hundreds of times faster than today's supercomputers.
